Sun

What is the origin of the name for our local star, the "Sun"? Why do we call it the "Sun"?

The primary (the central star) of the Solar system has many names in many different languages. In English, the most common name is “the Sun”.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the proper noun Sun derives from many sources, including the Latin Sol. The Old English name Sunne almost certainly derives from the old Germanic sunne. There are several variants of the word in other languages, such as zon or zonne (Dutch) and sunna (Old High German, Gothic, and Old Norse).

Etymologists think these terms all rise from an unknown Indo-European root term.
